Cozumel, Mexico

Kosher Cruise Port Guide

Cozumel is a tropical island off the eastern coast of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula and one of the most popular cruise ports in the Western Caribbean. Known for its world-class snorkeling and diving, turquoise waters, and laid-back island atmosphere, Cozumel welcomes millions of cruise passengers each year.

Highlights

  • Snorkeling at Palancar Reef — Cozumel is part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second-largest reef system in the world. Crystal-clear water with visibility up to 200 feet.
  • Chankanaab Adventure Beach Park — An eco-park with snorkeling, sea lion shows, a tequila museum, and a replica Mayan village. Great for families.
  • San Gervasio Mayan Ruins — The island's main archaeological site, once a sacred pilgrimage destination dedicated to the Mayan goddess Ixchel.
  • Playa Mia Grand Beach Park — An all-inclusive beach park with waterslides, floating obstacles, kayaks, and lounge areas.
  • Downtown San Miguel — The island's charming main town with shops, restaurants, and the waterfront malecón. Walking distance from the cruise pier.
  • El Cielo sandbar — A shallow, stunning turquoise sandbar famous for starfish sightings. Accessible by boat tour.

Tips for Kosher Travelers

  • Kosher restaurants in Cozumel — Cozumel is one of the few Caribbean islands with dedicated kosher dining. Alma Kosher Restaurant at the Chabad house (5a Avenida Sur) serves kosher meals daily. Fuego by Riviera Kosher (on Rafael Melgar, waterfront) offers tapas-style kosher dining with ocean views, certified by American Kosher.
  • Chabad of Cozumel — Rabbi Dudi Caplin runs a welcoming Chabad center at 5a Avenida Sur in San Miguel. Shabbat services and meals host 100-300 guests weekly. Contact: +52-987-104-0770 or chabadcozumel.com.
  • Bring sealed snacks — For beach excursions away from town. Pack granola bars, nuts, and fruit. See our packing list.
  • Fresh fruit is abundant — Local fruit stands sell whole fresh fruit (coconuts, mangoes, pineapples) which can be a great snack option.

Port Guide

Cozumel has three cruise piers. International Pier and Punta Langosta are within taxi distance of downtown San Miguel. Puerta Maya has its own shops and restaurants at the pier. Taxis are plentiful and inexpensive — agree on the fare before you ride.

US dollars are widely accepted on the island. Most shops and excursion operators take credit cards. The island is very safe and welcoming to tourists.
