Roatán, Honduras

Kosher Cruise Port Guide

Roatán is the largest of Honduras's Bay Islands, located in the western Caribbean. Surrounded by the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, it's a paradise for snorkeling and diving, with warm turquoise waters, lush tropical landscapes, and a welcoming island culture.

Highlights

  • West Bay Beach — Consistently rated one of the best beaches in the Caribbean. Powder-white sand, calm water, and excellent snorkeling right from shore.
  • Snorkeling & Diving — Roatán sits on the world's second-largest barrier reef. You can snorkel right from the beach or join a boat excursion to deeper reef sites.
  • Gumbalimba Park — A nature reserve with zip-lines, hanging bridges, tropical birds, monkeys, and a private beach. Great for families.
  • Zip-line adventures — Multiple operators offer zip-line tours through the jungle canopy with ocean views. Some include beach time after.
  • Mahogany Bay — A cruise port facility with a chairlift to a private beach, shopping village, and water activities.
  • Little French Key — A private island excursion with beaches, animal encounters, and all-inclusive packages.

Tips for Kosher Travelers

  • Eat on the ship — Return to the ship for meals. West Bay Beach is about 20 minutes from the port by taxi, so plan timing accordingly.
  • Bring sealed snacks — Pack snacks for the beach. Fresh coconuts are available from beach vendors. See our packing list.
  • Book excursions with return time — Make sure any excursion gets you back with time for lunch on the ship if needed.
  • Beach club fees — West Bay Beach access is free, but beach chairs and umbrellas are typically rented from beach clubs. Negotiate prices.
  • Cash is useful — While US dollars are accepted, having small bills for tips and taxis is recommended.
  • Jewish history — While there's no Jewish community on Roatán, Honduras has a notable Jewish heritage. About 1,000 Jews live on the mainland, and Honduran consuls heroically rescued Jews during WWII by issuing passports and visas.

Port Guide

Cruise ships dock at one of two ports: Mahogany Bay (Carnival-affiliated) or the Town of Coxen Hole. Mahogany Bay has a chairlift to a beach and a shopping village. From Coxen Hole, taxis take you to West Bay Beach (about 20 minutes) or West End (about 15 minutes).

US dollars are accepted throughout the island. Taxis have set rates to major destinations — confirm the price before getting in. The island is generally safe in tourist areas.
